Sixty is the new forty, fifty is the new thirty this is what we hear from the health and beauty industry whether they are promoting a new product or inspiring people to be more health conscious.

But in all honesty when someone turns sixty does he or she really feels forty? Some say you are only as old as you feel others say it’s all about your spirit, your attitude towards life.

The reality is, no one wants to grow old or even worse… grow old alone. But what do you do when you’re in your sixties and your passed on? Do you check yourself into an old age home to spend your Autumn years until you expire with others that are in the same position as you are?

If you are lucky you might have the odd visit from family, if you have any. Or you could be proactive. Instead of writing a will and getting your estate in order, why not have a list of things you always wanted to do like Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson in the “The Bucket list”.  No, you do not need to have a terminal illness or even be sick.

Why conform to the norm? Why should you leave all your hard earned money to your kids especially if they are going to let you check into a house for the elderly?  That should answer your question about whether you are valued or not.

I’m not at that point yet, but after watching “The Bucket list” it changed my perspective on how we should spend our twilight years and  am open to some adventures. We all are going to die someday and according to some religions any years lived after sixty is a gift, but of course we can somehow guess according to family history what our life span will be although this might not be an accurate science.

But, for example, if most of your family kicks the bucket from the sixties onward, I think it’s safe if you work with those numbers, however Lord help you if you live to the lovely old age of 100.

Because if you had a bucket list at sixty and finished everything on the list by the ripe old age of seventy, it will leave you broke for the next 20 years. So I guess it’s easier said than done because a bucket list requires money unless you only list sentimental things that do not require finance.

Maybe it would be a good idea to play it safe and check into a retirement village, it’s almost the same as a retirement home where support is concerned but you still have a life of your own.

Who knows, maybe you will meet the love of your life in your golden years like Edward did in Jason’s Heart – Secrets and Lies by KONG Pub, however no one knows how it will turn out in the end.

As far as I am concerned, I will do my best to live my life to the fullest with whatever time I have left and not wait until I am elderly and then try to live, after all whether we feel young or are young at heart time does not stand still for anyone and every moment that passes is lost and cannot be regained.

In the past single parenthood was usually brought on by a teenage pregnancy or divorce but these days a large portion of single parents consciously chose to be single parents.

We live in a world where women are the CEO’s of companies and are just as successful, if not more, as men. They do not have time for a nuclear family but still want a part of them to stay behind when they pass on.

Some opt for adoption and others IVF and of course there are some who prefer the old fashion way which is less expensive but might complicate things when it comes to custody.

Being a single parent might be daunting but there are benefits to it although the know-it-alls might not agree. Most parents know how precious “me time” is but the chances of getting it is practically zero if you run a full house with kids and a husband.

But if you are a single parent, depending whether you have an ex or a baby daddy that shares custody, you will definitely appreciate that one weekend every month when you get the house all to yourself.

Everything stays in its place, you get to catch up on your favorite soaps and best of all… silence, peace and tranquility. For those who want to splash on themselves, a weekend at the spa would be even better, getting buffed, puffed, plucked and primed at leisure. For a childless person this might sound selfish, but be very sure when you have kids you will appreciate every free second you can get for yourself, that’s if you manage to get any.

Besides indulging in selfish acts, the fact that your word is law makes life much easier. Bedtime is bedtime and no one is saying, “Oh just let them stay up for another half hour”.

It is better to concentrate on your kids and discipline them because you’re not wasting any time arguing with a spouse about chores and what is whose responsibility. Sometimes it’s also better for kids to grow up with a stable single parent than with unstable constantly arguing and fighting parents. Kids are copy what they see not by what we tell them.

The same like the character Sharona in a KONG Pub novel called Jason’s Heart –Secrets and Lies had to overcome her fear of single parenthood, most of us in the same situation learn how to cope.

In all being a single parent is not as daunting as it used to be and although it might not be everyone’s choice it is something that is part of today’s society.
