Chapter 7 excerpt :
After she put J.J. to bed, Sharona took a shower and dressed in her PJ’s, poured a glass of red wine, and sat on the couch. She quickly dozed off and fell into a deep sleep.
“Sharona, honey; here, take this,” Jason said, handing her a green shoebox.
“Jason? Honey, I’ve missed you so much,” she said. As she reached for him, JJ’s crying woke her up.
Her heart was beating fast. She looked around, only to realize that it was a dream. As much as she wanted to compose herself, J.J.’s screaming compelled her to check on him. When she finally reached him standing in his cot, she quickly picked him up and comforted him.
“There, there… it’s ok. Mommy is here.”
J.J.’s little arms were wrapped tightly around her neck. He must’ve had a bad dream, she thought. Sharona sat in the rocking chair in the corner next to the window, trying to get J.J. to sleep again, when she thought about her dream. It’d been a very long time since she’d dreamed about Jason, but her dreams had always been about the past. Not like this one. A green shoebox. Why on earth would Jason give her a green shoebox?
After a while, J.J. fell asleep and she laid him down next to her in bed, just in case he woke up again. She stared at the ceiling but quickly dozed off, only to be startled by her alarm clock a short while afterwards.
Strangely, the alarm’s noise didn’t wake J.J. up, which was a good thing. It gave her a chance to get ready for work in peace. Caldine, the nanny, was taking him to a play date in the morning, so there was no need for her to get him ready. Not long afterwards, the nanny arrived and Sharona was on her way to her car.
She buckled up and turned the key in the ignition. The car idled and her hands were on the steering wheel, ready to reverse, when she suddenly turned the key again and the engine stopped. Caldine stood on the porch with a confused expression on her face. She thought Sharona might have forgotten something. She got out of the car and went back inside the house with the nanny following. J.J. was still asleep.
“I think I will take him to his play date today,” said Sharona. “You can have the day off. I will still pay you for a full day.”
Caldine didn’t ask any questions; she was just too happy to get paid leave. After the nanny left, Sharona went to check on J.J. He was starting to wake up. With his eyes still closed, he stretched like a cat.
“How can I leave you alone today…? I think we need a Mommy and me day,” she said, gently stroking his head.
She called her work and informed them that she wasn’t coming in. As usual, they were very concerned but understood that she needed the day off. She changed into her mommy jeans and a T-shirt, but when she walked past the mirror, she took a second look.
“A far cry from the Penthouse Grill… I think I need to spice it up a bit. What do you think, J.J.?”
J.J. was sitting on the bed, giggling and clapping his hands as if he agreed. She swapped her mommy jeans for a pair of sexy Elle sweatpants and a top, tied her hair in a high ponytail and applied a little makeup, just enough to emphasize her eyes. She took another look in the mirror.
“You like? You like?” she said to J.J., who was clapping hands and holding his arms out to her.
He certainly approved of his mom’s look. She quickly changed him and then they left to go to his play date. When they arrived at the park, there were already several parents with their tots. One of the kids’ parents, Edna, who had arranged the play date, thought it would be a nice change not to have it at someone’s house. J.J. was quickly whisked away by a fellow tot to the sandbox, which was in plain sight of all the moms.
Sharona was warmly welcomed by the other moms, but not without passing remarks about her dress code. They kept asking her if she was comfortable, but she knew all too well that they felt a bit intimidated by the mommy without the mommy jeans. She helped set the tables, looking every so often in J.J.’s direction to see if he was ok. When their eyes met, they would wave at each other. Sharona felt at ease.
Time went past very quickly and soon it was time for lunch. All the moms went to collect their kids from the sandpit, and others chased after their tots, who were trying to have one last dig in the sand. Sharona strolled towards the sandpit, searching for J.J., but she didn’t see him. The closer she got to the sandpit, the more nervous she became. While standing inside the sandpit, she looked around frantically screaming for J.J., but he was nowhere to be found.
Very quickly, a bunch of moms rallied around her and tried to calm her down, while the rest searched for J.J. Sharona sat at one of the tables, holding her head in her hands. She did her best to stay calm but could not prevent the tears from coming. Suddenly, she saw a bunch of moms accompanied by a man coming her way. She could not make out his face clearly, because her tears clouded her vision. It seemed as if the man was carrying a child.
“I think this little man belongs to you,” he said.
“J.J.! You gave me such a scare. I thought I was going out of my…” But before she could finish her sentence, she realized that the man standing in front of her was none other than Dr. Diego Cruz.
“We meet again,” he said, smiling, “though not on such a positive note.”
“What? How?”
“Well, I was on my way to the deli to pick up something for lunch. I was in the mood for a walk, so I took the shortcut through the park, when this little mister came waddling towards me in the pathway. I saw the kids playing in the sandpit, so I thought he must’ve strayed.”
Sharona watched J.J. He sat on Diego’s arm, playing with the collar of his shirt. It seemed as if Diego didn’t mind the boy tugging and pulling at his collar. It was very strange, because this was not the J.J. that she knew. The J.J. she knew hated strangers, but he seemed to be fond of Diego. Every so often, while talking, Diego would glance J.J.’s way. He would giggle and continue playing with Diego’s shirt collar. It was the strangest thing.
“J.J., my boy… come to Mommy,” a relieved Sharona said, smiling.
“No,” J.J. said, refusing to go to her.
“He seems to really like you,” Sharona said to Diego.
She held her arms out to J.J. again.
“No,” J.J. said again.
“J.J., honey, come on… The nice man has to go back to work,” she said. J.J. still refused.
Why J.J. still refused?
